Recently the title of Lord of Woodbury Salterton was up for sale! The Lordship dates back to the Domesday Book when the village had a church and mill.

The landscape around Woodbury Salterton has not changed much since Victorian times with its fauna rich hedges , small woodlands and copses.

Walk 1 to Woodbury (4 miles)

lush old hedges

Difficulty:

As parking space is limited in the village, this pub and dog walk could also start in a free car park in Woodbury.

This is generally an easy walk though some sections of the walk can be wet after heavy rain and wellies are recommended, particularly during the winter months.

Woodbury Salterton Pub
Digger's Rest

Starting from Digger's Rest the walk takes you through small lanes , tracks and public footpaths to the village of Woodbury, which itself enjoys two pubs:

the Malster's Arms & the White Hart Inn

It continues past Woodbury's church into Church Stile Lane. Turn right at Oakhayes Road, then left into a public footpath just before some allotments.

This stretch , underlain by the estuary's mudstone and silt , can be a bit muddy.

The route returns skirting Lower Pilehayes Farm (take care :part of footpath may be hidden by long grass) and joins Higher Lane , an old Devon lane.

The walk includes several stiles.
