Bideford (originally 'By the ford') marks the lowest place to cross the river Torridge. It is famous for it's long bridge and the place where Kingsley Amis wrote most of his 'Westward Ho!' .

Bideford Town Trail

Walk 2 Bideford to Appledore (3.2 miles one way)

A delightful walk following mainly public footpaths. with lots of opportunities to explore the natural beauty of this region.

Check timetable for bus 21a from bideford.

  • return the way you came
  • take the ferry to Instow and walk back to Bideford along the river following the well signed South West Coastal Path.
