Knowstone Moor

Walk 1 Knowstone Moor (4.6 miles)

Difficulty:

Rackenford is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as 'Rachenforda' implying reference to a ford across the nearby Little Dart River.The meaning of Rachen is disputed.

The village boasts a medieval church, a small shop, a primary school and a pub , currently closed.

Enjoy a gentle and scenic walk through rural Devon, following part of the Two Moors Way and skirting Knowstone Moor, with no steep hills to climb.

Look out for skylarks, buzzards, and kestrels.

In late summer, the moor bursts into colour with blooming heather and gorse

The last stretch (.8 miles) follows a wide road with some traffic.

 Knowstone Moor is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
