Modbury with its enchanting individual shops is officially not a town eventhough it's too big to be a village.

The Swete Family lived at Traine near Modbury and were town benefactors - John Swete was a well known 18thy century painter.

Names of streets Runaway Lane , Cotlass Lane may have their origin in the 1643 civil war between Roundheads and Cavaliers.

The Walk

A From the Pay & Display Car Park walk to the end of the car park with Health Centre on your right and continue along a footpath heading south of Modbury.

B After 150m take another footpath on right.

Where it joins a lane turn right then almost immediately left into Cotlass Lane.

After 3/4 of a mile it makes a sharp turn to the right where it joins a track.

C Continue along the lane, cross the Brook and soon turn right onto a public footpath.

This footpath eventually joins Runaway Lane and soon becomes a track.

At Church Lane turn right.

D Either turn left into the church yard , past the church and onto Church Street.

Or continue along the lane ignoring a lane on right and turn left into Moon Lane which takes you to the shops.

Turn right and continue along the A379 browsing the individual shops. Walk past the White Hart Hotel and turn right into Poundwell Street.
