A great pub walk along the river Axe and into a countryside where time has stood still.

Map of Walk 1

Parking in Axmouth is virtually impossible but there are spaces near the bridge across the Axe.

There are 2 ways of doing this walk, clockwise or anti clockwise.

To avoid a steep climb at the beginning of the walk we have opted for going clockwise with possible refreshments at the Golf club house.

The Walk

A From the parking area you follow the main road to Axmouth on a pavement adjacent to the main road.

This stretch of the Axe Valley is much loved by bird watchers.

There is a small platform near a picnic area in Axmouth giving you stunning views of the estuary and its wild life.

After the Ship Inn turn right tin to Chapel street. After 200 m turn left up a footpath.

At the end of the path turn right into Higher Lane. After 300m turn left into a bridle path - parts of the path may be lined with nettles.

B At the end of the bridle path you see statues flanking the entrance to the 12th century Bindon Manor.

Turn right on a lane lined with charming cottages.

Along this stretch the Welsh King of Dumnonia and the English King of Wessex clashed in 612.

After 200m turn left over a stile into a footpath and climb steadily to Stepps Lane.

C Turn left and follow the lane for 200 m (5 mins) then turn right into a footpath - entrance can be obscured by shrubs but the path is well maintained.

Continue until you join the South West Coast Path to Lyme Regis.

Turn Right.

This is a beautiful stretch with glorious views of the coast line.

D The Axe Cliff Golf Club welcomes ALL walkers for refreshments or meals - membership not required!
