Best Exeter to Topsham Walk

Difficulty:

In theory you can walk all the way from Exeter Quay to Topsham harbour following the canal & Exe estuary.

However, the stretch below the motorway bridge is passable only at low tide AND ONLY IN WELLINGTONS or better still WADERS!!!

There are 2 alternatives:

Ferry dependent walk

Walk along the canal towards Exminster and take the ferry across to Topsham.

Although this is a very pleasant walk, you are totally relying on the ferry which might not operate on the day you set off or the time you arrive.

The Recommended (green) Walk (5 miles)

Start from the Prospect Inn near the Quay.

Walk along the canal & river passing the old Paper Mills and unto Mill Road full of historic buildings.

Cross a busy Bridge Road into Glasshouse lane

This is a very old part of Countess Weir.

Next, veer off onto a cycle path to Topsham and just before Topsham turn right to join the river - see map.

Allow for a good 2 hours. This is a fairly easy walk.

Take the T bus back into Exeter.

Start at the Quay past the Prospect Inn.
