An easy pub walk along the Roman Road to Lyme Regis then at the Cat & Fiddle turn inland and follow footpaths to St Mary's Church, Winslade Park.

On Whit Sunday in 1549 first English-language Prayer Book was introduced in English churches.

This change sparked a rebellion in the West Country, where around 10, 000 people marched to Exeter, demanding the return of the traditional Latin Mass and the suppression of the new Prayer Book.

During the uprising, the rebels nearly killed Walter Raleigh’s father, who narrowly escaped harm with the help of mariners from Exmouth.

The rebels fortified a bridge on Clyst Heath but were ultimately defeated by Italian soldiers under Lord Russell. In the aftermath, the village of Clyst St Mary was burned, villagers were killed, and Sir William Winslade was hanged nearby for his role in the rebellion.
