Sir Francis Drake lived in Buckland Abbey (National Trust) near Buckland - Monachorum , land owned by the monks.

The monks built a church dedicated to St Andrew, where Drake's ship is carved on one of the pews.

Difficulty:

A very pleasant circular country walk from Buckland-Monachorum 's church following public foot / bridle paths and quiet lanes.

After heavy rain, some stretches can be
quite muddy.

It includes a steady climb and descent.

The Walk

A Follow path to left of church , near the 12th century village pub the Drake Manor Inn.

Follow this public path for one mile almost in a straight line to a country lane, with North Plantation on your left.

B Cross road and continue for 100 m and turn left into a path, You now join part of the West Devon Way to Tavistock.

Continue for 1.6 miles in a north westerly direction following signs for the West Devon Way .

Ignore paths either side of this route.

C At the top ( an area called Bucktor) leave the West Devon Way and turn left into a bridle path .

Continue descending back towards Buckland-Monachorum.

D Turn right at a country lane then after the bend turn left into a public footpath.
