Difficulty

The walk runs through the Knightstone estate - the private Manor was built by Thomas de Bittlesgate in 1380 and is one of the best preserved medieval houses in Britain currently owned by the Copleston family.

You can sneak a glimpse of the house and gardens before crossing a small ford.

This easy and varied walk starts in the outskirts of Ottery St Mary, well known for its annual Tar Barrel event.

At Knightstone Manor its turns west towards the river Otter, takes in a fascinating old tumbling weir and finally leads you through the town itself, towards its most impressive church where Samuel Taylor Coleridge's father was once vicar.

It also houses the oldest mechanical clock in the country.

An easy and varied walk taking in the key attractions of this charming town.

You pass the site where it is said Sir Walter Raleigh was born - look out for a blue plaque on the brick built Raleigh House.

Just before Sainsbury's you walk through a small park - one side of the path is lined with quotations from Coleridge's Kublai khan.
