Pinhoe , a village on the Pin Brook or a settlement on the hill (hoe) , offers the walker many stunning views of the estuary, East Hill near Ottery St Mary or the Blackdown Hills beyond Cullompton and Honiton.

Country lane names like Tithebarn, Mosshayes or Langaton, Blackhorse, Cheynegate hint at a fascinating past threatened by modern development.

Walk 1 Pinhoe to Pinhoe Church (1.5 miles)

Difficulty:

This walk takes you along the Pin Brook, past the old Brick Factory, along what used to be a quarry , climbing steadily to Pinhoe Church - 14/15th Century.

From you can enjoy stunning views of the Exe Estuary.

In 1001, slightly further up , the Battle of Pinhoe was fought between the Saxons and the Vikings.

The Saxons fought bravely but ran out of ammunition and retreated to the safety of Exeter's city walls ; the Vikings took revenge and plundered Pinhoe!

A great walk into the past to Beacon Hill , once the scene of a battle between the Vikings and a local force of Devon & Somerset people.

It follows mainly quiet lanes and public footpaths.

Please note that after heavy rain some stretches can become muddy.

It also involves some climbing to the Church and beyond.
