The Walk

A This delightful walk starts at the famous Cider Press.
Walk down towards the bridge. Just before the bridge turn left onto a cycle path.

B Follow cycle path along the stream and after 0.2 miles turn left up a public footpath (ignore another path which turns sharp left ) .

C When you reach a lane turn right then soon where the woods start turn right again.
This takes you through the impressive and tranquil gardens of Dartington Hall.

D The medieval hall built between 1388 and 1400 for John Holand, Earl of Huntingdon, half-brother to Richard II. After John was beheaded, the Crown owned the estate until it was acquired in 1559 by Sir Arthur Champernowne, Vice-Admiral of the West under Elizabeth I. The Champernowne family lived in the Hall for 366 years.

EFollow lane past Car Park then where it splits take the left fork , Warren Lane. At the start of the forest take a footpath left, and continue roughly maintaining this direction towards the river.

F There is an option to explore the village of Staverton , its Church (no pub) and a fascinating medieval bridge.

In the distance you may hear the hoots of the Buckfastleigh and Totnes steam train.

G A public footpath takes you through Old Parsonage Farm and back to the Cider Press.
